Buying a cow is a big decision, whether it’s for a wedding, a festive season, a family gathering, or a business. The animal has to be healthy, well-conditioned and worth what you pay. At ParriCow, we believe an informed buyer is a confident buyer, so here is what to look for before you decide.
1. Start with the eyes and face
A healthy cow has bright, clear, alert eyes. Watery, cloudy or dull eyes can signal illness. The nose should be moist and free of heavy discharge, and the animal should react to movement and sound around it.
2. Check the body condition
A good animal is neither bony nor overly thin. Look for a full, well-rounded frame with a smooth, clean coat. Visible ribs, sunken flanks or a rough, patchy coat can point to poor feeding or poor health.
3. Watch how it stands and walks
Ask to see the animal move. It should stand evenly on all four legs and walk without limping or stiffness. Healthy hooves are clean and even, not cracked or swollen.
4. Look for signs of good appetite
A healthy cow eats and drinks normally and chews its cud calmly. An animal that ignores feed or stands apart from the others may be unwell.
5. Match the animal to your purpose
A cow for a large celebration has different requirements from one for a small family. Decide your budget and the quantity of meat you need before you start looking. Paying for size you don’t need is as wasteful as buying too small.
6. Buy from a source you trust
Buy from sellers who are open about where their animals come from and who let you inspect before you pay. Be careful with prices that look too good to be true.
